Meet Your Hosts

The Aerie Bed and Breakfast, Guest House and Conference Center is an elegant North Carolina inn and meeting space that is lovingly cared for and hosted by owner/innkeepers, Michael and Marty Gunhus. Their efforts have resulted in The Aerie's recognition by Select Registry for excellence in both service and accommodations and a three diamond rating award by AAA.

Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, Michael and Marty Gunhus were high school sweethearts and married soon after college. They stayed in Des Moines and started raising their two sons; Eric lives in New York, and younger son Jeff lives in Maryland with his wife and five children. The grandkids, Marty will tell you, are the real reason behind the move to the East Coast.

Michael and Marty previously lived in Long Beach, California and owned a small bed and breakfast there while also maintaining careers in "more conventional jobs." Marty was the executive assistant to the president of an international manufacturer for over 14 years, while Michael was a senior construction inspector for the City of Los Angeles.

Between Iowa and California, moves to Greece, the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, and Saudi Arabia became home to their family until they returned and moved to Colorado for four years and on to California in 1988. It was there in Long Beach in 1995 that they decided to open a bed and breakfast in their 1910 California Craftsman home, which they ran for seven years. Always telling their guests and friends that they wanted to do a bigger B&B in the future, they made the decision and after six months of searching, a trip to New Bern, NC in October of 2002 realized that dream.

As they tell it, "We drove into New Bern on October 11th, 2002 just as dusk was approaching. We saw the bridge, the water, the marina and the skyline of the town and it made such a wonderful impression on us. The Aerie was perfect, we immediately loved the town and that evening and the next morning we walked and talked and just knew that it was meant to be." Mike and Marty moved on November 25th of that year. The Gunhus continue to enjoy being an active part of the New Bern community and look forward to enhancing their guests' experiences at The Aerie for a long time to come.
